Head lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp and feed on blood up to six times a day. Common signs of head lice include an itchy scalp or frequent scratching. You might also spot white eggs (known as nits) stuck to the hair shafts close to the scalp.

If you or your child has head lice, it’s important to treat the entire household to prevent re-infestation. Let your child’s school know so other parents can check and treat their children as needed. To help manage head lice:

Keep fingernails short to avoid skin irritation from scratching.

Make sure everyone in your home uses their own hairbrush.

Wash bed linen frequently to eliminate any nits, as they can hatch later.
